A third-party car insurance is a statutory requirement when you own a car in Denmark. A third-party insurance covers the damage you and your car might cause to other people, their belongings or their vehicles. However, this type of insurance does not cover injury to yourself or damage to your car.

If you want to cover your own car against theft or damage you need a more extensive car insurance: we offer four types of car insurance in addition to our Third-party Insurance (Ansvar): Third party, fire & theft (Delkasko), Comprehensive (Kasko), Comprehensive Plus (Comprehensive Plus) and Car/Leasing Super (the most comprehensive).

  • Insurance Company of the Year

    For the second time in succession the Danish automobile dealers’ association Autobranchen Danmark declared If Insurance Company of the Year 2016.

    You get roadside assistance on the go with a comprehensive motor insurance.

  • Courtesy car

    With a comprehensive motor insurance you are offered a courtesy car while your own car is being repaired.

Third party

Covers damage you as a driver cause to other people, their belongings or their vehicles.

If you hit a cyclist with your car, for example, the car insurance will compensate the cyclist.

Theft of the car or its parts

Covers both damage to your car inflicted during theft attempts and the loss of your stolen car or car parts.

Windshield chip

Covers chips to your car windscreen caused by stones.

If you are part of our Benefit Programme you also get:

  • Cover of up to DKK 600 in the event of a stone chipping your car's windscreen and the damage being irreparable – without this affecting your level and excess.
  • If the windscreen is irreparable we will replace it - also without this affecting your level and applying a maximum excess of DKK 1,500.
Fire, lightning, explosion, and short circuit

Covers damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion or short circuit.

Legal expenses insurance

May cover legal fees and other costs associated with conducting a case, if you need to settle a conflict in court.

Roadside assistance abroad

Covers roadside assistance abroad provided by SOS International and the Nordic "Red Card".

The cover includes additional repatriation expenses, unexpected hotel stays at the scene of the accident, towing, procurement of spare parts etc.

Courtesy car (If assigns the repair shop)

Covers a courtesy car while your own car is being repaired.

Extra car equipment (up to DKK 20,000)

Covers extra non-factory-fitted car equipment up to DKK 20,000, including alarms and child car seats.

Damage to the insured car

Covers damage to your car, e.g. as a result of a crash, collision, parking, single-vehicle collision or total write-off.

Driver Injury Cover

Covers the driver of the car in the event of a single vehicle collision for which no party is responsible, e.g. hitting a tree.

In some cases the Driver Injury Cover and the No Claims Cover in the event of a collision with an animal (Comprehensive Plus) are not part of Car Super. They may be provided with some Car Brand Insurances, or car insurances bought at dba.dk, BilBasen.dk, GulogGratis.dk or Autobutler.dk.

The policy will show whether you have Comprehensive Plus or Car Super as part of your car insurance.

No-Claims Cover in the event of collision with an animal

Covers collisions with larger mammals without a price adjustment or a drop in level. We will also reduce your excess by up to DKK 3,000.

In some cases the Driver Injury Cover and the No Claims Cover in the event of collision with an animal (Comprehensive Plus) are not part of Car Super. They may be provided with some Car Brand Insurances, or car insurances bought at dba.dk, BilBasen.dk, GulogGratis.dk or Autobutler.dk.

The policy will show whether you have Comprehensive Plus or Car Super as part of your car insurance.

Extended courtesy car in the event of theft

Covers a courtesy car for up to 35 days while you wait to get your own car back after a theft or car robbery.

Extended compensation in the event of a total write-off

In the event of a total write-off you get the equivalent of the car's purchase price at the time of the initial registration if your car is less than 3 years old.

If the car is more than 3 years old you get the equivalent of the trading price + 15%.

Extended theft cover

You get the equivalent of the car's trading price + 15%.

Engine and mechanical damage

Covers sudden damage to the car's engine, incl. the electronic steering, the gearbox/transmission, the fuel system, the brakes and the complete steering.

First leasing payment

Covers your first leasing payment if your car is stolen or is a total write-off.

You may get the first leasing payment refunded – up to DKK 25,000 in the first year, DKK 15,000 in the second year, DKK 10,000 in the third year and DKK 7,000 in the fourth year.

The only requirement is that the car be brand new and that the leasing period be at least 12 months.

Restitution Insurance*

Covers the same damage as the comprehensive motor insurance, when the repairs can be carried out for a max. of DKK 5,000, and with a total maximum compensation for all damage of DKK 25,000.

The Restitution Insurance excess is DKK 5,000, regardless of the number of claims.

The leasing period must be 12-36 months, and the car must have driven a maximum of 120,000 km at the time of return. The insurance also covers discontinued leases, though they must have been in force for at least 12 months.

* Excl. commercial and semi-commercial cars.


Additional cover

For those who want to be on the safe side

This additional cover brings you extras totalling over DKK 20,000, extending the comprehensive motor insurance's basic DKK 20,000 DKK cover.

This can include rims, roof boxes, music systems, DVD systems, PlayStations or navigational equipment.

You can get this cover in addition to:

  • Third party, fire & theft (Delkasko)
  • Comprehensive (Kasko)
  • Comprehensive Plus
  • Car Super/Leasing Super (most comprehensive)

You can get roadside assistance through If and the breakdown service SOS Dansk Autohjælp if you buy a comprehensive motor insurance.

You can get roadside assistance as additional cover if you already have a car insurance with us.

FAQs

What happens after I sell my car?

When you sell your used car in Denmark, the new owner usually has 21 days to re-register the car. When the car is re-registered, the Danish Customs and Tax Administration (SKAT) and the Danish motor-registration system DMR will let us know, and we will terminate your car insurance as from the re-registration date.

We will transfer any credit you may have with us to your NemKonto (‘Easy Account’).

When will I receive the policy for my car insurance?

The Danish Customs and Tax Administration SKAT will notify us around the 20th of the month, after which we create your policy. If your car insurance is set to start on July 1st, for example, we will receive a notification from SKAT around June 20th, after which we will create your policy and send it to you.


Do I need an insurance certificate to re-register my car?

No, you do not need a car insurance certificate to re-register your car. You can re-register your car directly at DMR using your NemID (‘Easy ID’).

Why do I not have roadside assistance on my comprehensive insurance?


You have roadside assistance as a part of your comprehensive insurance:

  • If you purchased your comprehensive motor insurance directly from us after October 25th, 2014. 

  • If you purchased your comprehensive motor insurance via Bilbasen.dk or Guloggratis.dk after February 12th, 2016. 

  • After the introductory period, if you purchased an Introductory Insurance from a licensed car dealer (excl. Ald, Ford and Volvo).

You do not have roadside assistance:

  • During the introductory period if you purchased a biannual or annual Introductory Insurance through a licensed dealership. You may instead have Mobility Cover. 

    If you want to use your Mobility Cover during the introductory period, check your service booklet for the phone number. Your policy will show whether your insurance will include the regular roadside assistance cover after the introductory period.

  • If you purchased your comprehensive motor insurance directly from us before October 25th, 2014. 

  • If you purchased your comprehensive motor insurance via Bilbasen.dk or Guloggratis.dk before February 12th, 2016. 

  • If you purchased your comprehensive motor insurance via DBA.dk or Junoforsikring.dk. 

  • After the introductory period, if you bought an Introductory Insurance for Ald, Ford or Volvo.

Can I use bonuses from other insurance companies?

You can easily transfer the bonus you have accumulated with another company to your new car insurance at If. Simply tell us from which company you are moving your insurance and we will transfer your bonus. 
If you have not held a car insurance during the past year you will lose a year's bonus per year without any car insurance.


Can I get a fixed price on my car insurance?

You can get a fixed price on your comprehensive motor insurance if you are at least 30 years old, have been registered as a ‘good driver’ (elitebilist) for at least 3 years and have several insurances with If.


What do I do about my damaged windscreen?

If you have a damaged windscreen and a normal car insurance you should contact Dansk Bilglas. If you have a special Car Brand Insurance you should contact your brand’s authorised car dealer.


Satellite monitoring and tracking systems

For insurance against theft certain vehicles must have a Satellite Tracking System installed. The system must be connected to an emergency centre approved by the Danish National Police .
