My job in If
My primary job is to have a deep and thorough understanding of the organization's data so that the business can easily understand and apply data to strategic decisions. It is a technical role, where the work i.a. consists of:

  • Design / maintain systems and databases under which data related problems and code errors are most often the primary tasks
  • Extraction of data from primary and secondary sources and then organized data in a readable format and for further use
  • Use of statistical tools to be able to interpret trends and patterns that could be of interest to the business
  • Build easy-to-understand reports that clearly communicate the results for use by business leaders

Started as a student assistant
I started in if as a student assistant in our claims department with the title ‘Data analyst’ back in April 2018, and at that time I read the last half of my master's degree. When I completed my master's degree in January 2019, I was offered a fulltime position in our Nordic ‘Customer analytics’ department as an analyst, and I am still there today.

It’s amazing to develop in If
In short, it's amazing. If is a place where you have a lot of sweet and helpful colleagues that you can learn a lot from but at the same time also someone who gives you input when you have a difficult task. What I think I appreciate most is that we are so agile and work across departments, because it means that your work affects several areas of the business and you gain knowledge / knowledge beyond your department. The fact that you work interdisciplinary also means that you get a huge network and get to know a lot of people internally in the company which of course only make it more fun to show up for work! Physically, If is an incredibly nice place to be in, it is incredibly bright and all floors are spacious with lots of daylight and green decor.

In recent times, If has launched a major project namely to put more focus on digitization of business as well as support data driven decisions. As an analyst, I contribute directly to this purpose, as I possess necessary technical skills for e.g. to be able to make raw data make sense. This then offers i.a. that business leaders can make better strategic data-driven decisions as well as create greater insight into the business.

It's cool to get responsibility from the beginning
What has surprised me the most is the trust that the company gives to you, all the way back from when I was a student assistant, I was given as much responsibility as I now wanted. I think this is cool, as it shows that the company dares to trust its employees and especially student assistants. This means that you are constantly challenged and allowed to develop at a pace you set yourself. Something else that I have appreciated is the opportunities to continue to acquire new skills. In my short time in IF, I have been allowed to take countless courses and participate in international events within our field (Data Analytics). Likewise, I am now considering taking a subject at CBS this autumn, which can further strengthen my skills in statistics, I think it is absolutely fantastic to be able to do that!

My advice to you
The student job I had before I was hired in If was in short awful, the worst position you can end up in is where the company limits you in relation to your development, that was what happened to me. Optimally, you should apply for a job in a place where you are allowed to unfold, acquire new skills, and most importantly allow yourself to develop at a pace where you feel comfortable. The best advice I can give is to be open to learning new things, look for work in something you think is interesting, and be hungry to learn as much as possible. I think salary is not as important a parameter as a student assistant who is far more value in the acquisition of knowledge - and the best and last piece of advice is that you must of course apply for a job in If!

You must make a career in If, if you want to be challenged in cash and acquire new skills and have the sharpest colleagues!
